X-Men 3: The Last Stand

This review is spoiler free.
I have to admit I'm kind of conflicted about this film, there were parts I liked and there were parts I didn't like. I had kept my expectations as low as possible beforehand. I knew there were new people working behind the scenes, and I knew all about Brett Ratner and his previous work. However I don't blame him for the parts I didn't like, I have to admit I'm still kind of blaming Bryan Singer for leaving before finishing the job. Silly and petty I know, but I love the first two movies so much.
Brett Ratner did a good job, he did, if there's any fault I'm more inclined to blame the scriptwriters.
There are so many new characters, of course some minor, so we knew we wouldn't get to know them very well, but Angel... whom I was really looking forward to seing is more of an extra than a major player. They really could have done something great with his character, and I'm really sad that they didn't take full advantage of his potential. I don't consider this a spoiler, more a warining to those eagerly awaiting him to tell them that he doesn't really have a lot of screen time. This happens to other characters too, some that we've known and loved in the previous two movies, I was kind of sad to see how they were treated by the scriptwriters, and that they were pushed aside.
The main trouble is that they had to little time to cram all of this in, they had a really interesting and exiting storyline to deal with, and I don't really feel that they used it to its full potential. Also, what I've loved about the previous two is the links to prejudice and rasism, and how that was conveyed. It's still there, but maybe not handled with the same kind of care that the previous two movies have done.
Okay, I know that's a lot of negativity, but it boils down to my love for the previous films. However, it's not as bad as I might be making it sound. The characters that the focus was put upon were nice to see, I loved the fact that Storm got to go a bit crazy too, seing her actually getting to fully use her powers. Wolverine kicking ass is always fun, and he did get to kick quite a lot of it. The film is a full packed action ride, which I always enjoy. We get to see different aspects of the characters, they've evolved and that was a treat to see.
I really liked Beast, his introductory scene was subtle and good, I enjoyed it, and his little convo with Wolverine upon their first meeting was very enjoyable.
I rarely say this about a film, but as stated above, I would have really liked it to be longer. So much cool stuff that was going on, I wanted more.
One thing I have to let you know, not all of the spoiler pics and trailers give a true impression of what is going to happen in the film, for example one line that I loved was dramatically changed in the film, basically turned into something different. I was okay with it though. There were also some pictures floating around of stuff that never happens in the film. That's all you need to know.
It seems I've focused on the negative in this review, but it's not all that bad, I need to let things sink in a little bit. I did enjoy this film, it was a fun ride, and I will definetly buy the DVD, and watch it in the cinema at least once more.
As I said, I need some time for it to sink in, then I can go watch it again fully knowing what to expect, which I think will be beneficial.

Date: 2006-05-25 09:21 pm (UTC)Even though they say this was the last film, it's still open for at least one more. And that does not conclude what happened after end credits. But just before them.
Angel should have gotten more screen time!

Date: 2006-05-25 09:38 pm (UTC)I did sit through the credits. I knew what it was all about the second the scene began though. Liked it.
He should I totally agree, he was a good character and they should have used him.

Re: just a few thoughts about angel.
Date: 2006-05-25 10:35 pm (UTC)Info about what? The layout of the building? How his daddy liked his coffee? 'My dad made the cure because of me'?
Wolverine knew Magneto and his gang were gonna 'steal' the "cure" The x-men were gonna do their best to stop it.
There really wasn't much Angel could provide information-wise that would have been helpful me thinks.
xx

Date: 2006-05-26 08:29 am (UTC)Naw, I get that feeling, but I guess what I was left feeling is that because of Angel having such a small part they might as well have taken a smaller character than him, so we wouldn't have all these expectations around it.
Me neither, but I'm guessing since the premiere date was set when Vaughn was still attached to direct... Brett came in late and therefore had less time to make the film with.

Date: 2006-05-26 08:31 am (UTC)Yeah, I had a slight warning beforehand, but didn't think it would be that little. Hopefully he'll get his chance to shine in the next one, because there will be a next one!
Hope you enjoy it! :D
You're very welcome.

Date: 2006-05-26 08:35 am (UTC)I haven't read to many of the comics, I'll admit, but they tend to loose a little in the Norwegian translation...
I hope you get to see it soon and that you enjoy it.

Date: 2006-05-29 12:13 pm (UTC)The Wolverine movie is in pre-production as far as I've heard, and they're planning a Magneto movie.
I'm not telling, you'll have to see for yourself.

Date: 2006-05-29 12:37 pm (UTC)It does need a second viewing. It's just like when I saw FOTR for the first time, I focused a little too much on what wasn't there, but the second time I could enjoy what was included, and I'm sure it'll be the same with X3. I also have to get used to Brett's style.
Now all we can do is wait for the Wolverine movie and X4. :)

Date: 2006-05-29 01:52 pm (UTC)A-The way Erik/Magneto treated Mysique(Sp?)
B-There were not as many witty comments as I was hoping for
C-Their eigther killed everyone off or messed them up-NOT HAPPY!
D-WTF!They made Rogue and wimp by making her do what she did!
E-I HATE Kitty,I have Jean and Ororo too.But Kitty I realy HATE! I guess I'm protective of Rogue's feelings, cause im so much like her. Anyone who gets to close to Logan I dislike.
F-Bobby needs to learn a few things about girls and stop being such a jerk!
G-Did you see the chess piece move? ::GASP:: maybe its not over for Rogue. ::shifty eyes::
H-I knew what was coming at the end of the credits.I knew from the begining. Not a huge surprise.
I-I made a joke during the movie that caused the person next to me to spit their icey out of their nose. I said.
"They must be running out of blue paint."
"Why?"-Friend
"Cause they don't have Nightcrawler in it and Mysique isn't mutant anymore. And the only part of beast you see are his arms, head and hands."
"What does that have to do with anything?"-Friend
"I'm just saying that we might see nightcrawler come back to be purple."
J-Has anyone noticed how Bobby never did anything sweet for Rogue..AT ALL,but always charms Kitty. ::EVIL GLARE!::
::Friend laughs and spits frozen drink out of nose, cold nose!::
