Star Wars 3: Revenge of the Sith.
May. 25th, 2005 01:03 pmAs I gave the impression of yesterday I’m not celebrating the latest instalment in the Star Wars saga. It’s the best of the new trilogy, but it still doesn’t come close to the old ones.
The main thing that bugged me with this one was that there was too much war and to little focus on the characters and their development. I liked the physical change of Anakin but I felt like they’d hit the Fast Forward button on the inner turmoil he should have felt and to me it seemed like the transformation went something like this:
Darth Sidious: Hey Anakin, wanna be evil?
Anakin: Uhm…
Darth Sidious: Oh please, the Jedi are bad, being a Sith rules.
Anakin: Ok.
Okay… maybe it wasn’t that simple, but that’s what it felt like to me.
Instead of focusing on what kind of cool CGI effects they could drum up, and how many stunts the Jedi and Sith can do when they fight, they could have spent a little more time on making the dialogue feel real and giving the characters more space to develop and allow us to know more about the people.
I think that has to be my main complaint: to little character development. This is the last one, the last stage before Anakin becomes Darth Vader! The focus was drawn away from that and towards Wookies and some silly android general. Must admit I really hated that character, Grieveious. I mean what the hell? A coughing robot, with four lightsabers and human guts… geez. All just to make room for yet another fight scene.
I’ll have to give Hayden Christensen a little plus, he seemed to be more comfortable in the role this time around, and even though he isn’t a great actor he’s shown improvement.
Ewan McGregor on the other hand seemed to falter once in a while, like he’s so sick of being Obi-Wan that he just doesn’t bother. Though that can also be blamed on some of the badly written dialogue. The same goes for Ian McDiarmid, especially in the opening scenes he was in, towards the end he seemed to be more confortable.
I also have some continuity issues, with regards to the old films, small stuff... but I'll lat that be for now.
That’s it for now… I invite discussion!
Might write a spoiler-filled-review later.
