Supernatural - 216 - Roadkill
Mar. 18th, 2007 08:34 pmMy reaction is behind the cut, I'm doing my review a little different this time, and hopefully a little shorter than usual, but I feel it's what this episode needs.
Supernatural: Roadkill (2.16)
Firts off, I really liked it. It was different, which I guess is why a lot of people didn't like it.
I love it when the writers just dump us in the middle of the story, we've followed the show long enough now to know how the boys work. Which is also why I felt the writers were confident enough to try something new, telling the story from the viewpoint of the guest of the week. Apparantly it wasn't a popular choiche, but personally I really liked it, and I think Tricia Helfer did a really good job. I mean, just imagine being in her shoes. Just surviving a crash, finding your husband missing and getting picked up from two guys with a trunk full of weapons!? I think it was very well done.
People have complained about the lack of brotherly banter and that the boys acted out of character, I missed the banter too, but I didn't think much about it as I was enjoying seing the boys through Molly's eyes. And the way the boys acted made sense by the end of the episode. I did kind of react to Dean being so uncaring towards Molly, but we all know how he feels about ghosts and such, so it's not really that surpising. The writer of this episode was trusting us to know enough about the boys to be able to fill in the blanks ourselves.
This episode had a nice creepy feeling, it made me feel uneasy which really hasn't happened since Supernatural: Asylum (#1.10), it actually made me jump a couple of times! Very cool.
I kind of knew at once that Molly was a ghost, but
In short I really liked this episode. And I think all three main players did a good job here. It might not have been the most interesting hunt in and of itself, but I really enjoyed the story, how it was told, and how it was resolved. And the fact that we got to view how the brothers work from a different point of view was really enjoyable. I think it was a good way to return from hiatus.
QUOTES:
Dean: Did he look like he lost a fight with a lawnmower?
Molly: Yeah, how'd you know?
Dean: Lucky guess.
Molly: This is really what you do, you're like Ghostbusters.
Dean: Except without the jumpsuits.
Dean: Follow the creepy brick road.
Dean: You know, just once I would like to round the corner and see a nice house.
Molly: I don't understand how a guy like this can turn into that monster.
Sam: Well, spirits like Greely are like wounded animals. Lost in so much pain that they lash out.
Molly: Why? Why are they here?
Sam: There's some part of them that ... that's keeping them here. Like their remains, or unfinished business.
Molly: Unfinished business?
Sam: Yeah, it could be revenge. It could be love, or hate. Whatever it is, they just hold on too tight. Can't let go. So they're trapped. Caught in the same loops, replaying the same tragedies over and over.
Molly: You sound almost sorry for them.
Sam: Well, they weren't evil people, you know. A lot of them were good, just something happened to them. Something they couldn't control.
Dean: Sammy's always getting a little J. Love Hewitt when it comes to this. Me, I don't like them. And I'm sure as hell ain't makin' apologies for them.
Molly: What happens if you burn their bones?
Sam: My dad always said it's like death for spirits. But the truth is, we never know.
Sam: It's an old country custom, Dean, planting a tree as a grave marker.
(pause)
Dean: You are like a walking encyclopedia of weird.
Sam: Yeah, I know.
Molly: Oh, thank God!
Dean: Call me Dean.
Dean: (to Sam) Alright, Haley Joel, let's hit the road.

Date: 2007-03-18 09:48 pm (UTC)Strangely I don't even missed the banter too much there. As much as I'm fond of their clever/silly quips, I think they would have ruined the atmosphere here. So it's all good by me.

Date: 2007-03-18 11:09 pm (UTC)It bugged me a bit about Dean being so cold to her.. but only because at the time I didn't know what Dean knew.. that she was a ghost. So once that was revealed.. I understood why he was so short and cold to her. But he did soften in the end. YOu could tell even he felt bad for her.. And he did say something like.. "She wasn't bad... for a ghost."
I wasn't sure at first if I liked the story being told from the guest's pov.. but I am open to different on occasion so it didn't bother me too much. And I was one of those that had no idea she was dead.. so it came as a total suprise to me. Which made the whole episode make sense. I had been wondering why the boys were acting so weird..
I actually enjoy watching it more now than I did the first time.. cause everything makes sense now. LOL

Date: 2007-03-19 01:04 am (UTC)I was talking to one of my friends online during the show (which I got him into watching in January. Go me!) and when we learned that she was already dead (cuz we're slow and totally didn't pick up on it...I realized I should've later, but I didn't see the similarities between The Sixth Sense and this episode until I watched it the second time. I didn't even catch the Hayley Joel comment correctly. I was just like like, "Wtf does Hayley Joel Osment have to do with shit?"), it totally threw us for a loop and we were like, "DAMN! THIS IS AWESOME!"
And I like how they ended it too. It was different. Instead of the spirit being killed in some other manner, she just let go herself. It was a nice change.
And I didn't miss the banter so much really, because it was an interesting episode, and I think some people are getting a bit too whiney. If they wanna see the show continue, it's gonna have to change up every once in awhile. Geez. Get over it.
:D

Date: 2007-03-19 09:48 am (UTC)I reacted to Dean being so cold, but it did make sense. Especially considering his views on them. I like it that this season brings in shades of gray.
And you're right, he did soften towards the end, which I think is a good thing.
I think it is an episode that you have to watch twice to fully apprechiate it.

Date: 2007-03-19 09:51 am (UTC)And yeah, those were great lines, and I felt that with those two lines the boys kind of reclaimed the episode a little bit.

Date: 2007-03-19 10:11 am (UTC)Hehe, the connection too 'The Sixth Sense' was great, which I suspect is also a reason for telling the story from Molly's point of view.
I think the end was nicely done, and I like how this season keeps introducing shades of gray when it comes to a hunt.
The banter wouldn't have fit with the feel of this episode.
On some level I get the people who didn't like it, but I feel some of them just focus on the things they didn't like. Hopefully next week's episode will make everybody happy again.

Date: 2007-03-19 12:57 pm (UTC)I love that they are playing around with different ways to show this. And I don't feel Dean and Sam are OOC. This episode was from her point of view and this is how she saw them. I've also seen some people who disliked that Sam told her about the salt, that it should be to explain to new viewers. I'm not so sure but to me it is Sam telling HER about it. She has never heard of it.
I love how they drive up to her boyfriend's house and she finds out she's a spirit. I thought it was great and no, I didn't have a clue. *g* But I love their ingenuity of telling a story.

Yeah, I've heard complaints about the salt-dialouge, but I didn't mind. It seemed natural that she'd ask about what they're doing. And if it helps new viewers it's just a bonus.
And like I mentioned above I thought it was cool to see the boys through a different pair of eyes.
I liked the end a lot too, it was a nice way to end the episode.

Agreed. :)
