Last episode before another hiatus. On the up side, when they come back they’ll go on till the finale.
It’s taken a while to write this review, but I needed some time to collect my thoughts.
Supernatural – 217 – Heart
Ok, so I was a bit jazzed that the plot took place in San Francisco, California, as I’ve always wanted to go there, and love it every time it’s used. Oh, the boys should take care of a ghost haunting Alcatraz! That’d be awesome!
Ehm, yeah, back to this episode.
So, horny lawyer guy gets torn to shreds. Icky.
Madison’s ex kind of looked like a mix between Stephen Dorff and Christian Kane, and it would have been way to obvious if he was the baddie.
Sam: Month after month all the murders happen in the week leading up to the full moon.
Dean: Which is this week, right?
Sam: Hence the lawyer.
Dean: Awesome.
Sam: Dean, could you be a bigger geek about this?
Dean: I'm sorry, man, but what about a human by day, a freak animal killing machine by moonlight don't you understand. I mean werewolves are badass, we haven’t seen one since we were kids.
Sam: (sarcastically) Okay, sparky, and you know what, after we kill it we can go to Disneyland.
Lol, I loved how exited Dean was about the thought of hunting a werewolf. And I do love it when Sam is actually snarky, and for some reason the thought of the two of them going to Disneyland wouldn’t leave my head. Just the thought seems so bizarre, which is why they must go sometime. Lol.
Dean: Landis, and Detective Dante.
The second I saw Glen I suspected he was a werewolf, I think it was because of how protective he was of Madison, and the t-shirt that made me suspect him. And the way he brushed against Madison when leaving, but mainly the t-shirt.
I suspected Madison might be a werewolf shortly after as well, only thing I wasn’t sure of was if it was both or one of them.
Madison: He had a few scotches in him and he started hitting on anyone within a five-mile radius. You know the type.
(Sam looks at Dean)
Sam: Yeah, I do, actually.
(Dean glares)
Lol, I loved that whole exchange. When Madison describes Nate you can see Dean instantly admiring him, and Sam noticing that has to cut him down a peg. Lol, just the look on both their faces was so great.
I loved Dean’s ‘dog-faced-boy’ comment as they were leaving Madison’s place. It reminded me of Alec and Dark Angel… awwww.
Sam: Find anything?
Dean: (looking in the fridge) Just some leftovers and a six pack.
Sam: Check the freezer. Maybe there's some human hearts hidden behind the Häagen-Daz or something.
Dude! Another snarky comment from Sam. I love it. Dean is rubbing off on him, because at first it didn’t register that Sam was the one who said it. It’s such a typical Deanism, but I love it when Sam does this too.
The werewolf POV shot colour style is taken from some old werewolf movie, but I can’t remember the title, and it’s bugging me.
The second I saw the cop, I knew he was going to die. Poor guy, he was probably only two days from leaving the force to open up his own flower shop that he’d been dreaming of for years.
Dean: I'd say Kurt's looking more and more like our Cujo.
Awww, good protective boys going to check on Madison.
Dean: One of us should probably stay here with you just in case he stops by.
(Madison leaves the room)
Sam: All right, you go, I'll stay.
Dean: Forget that. You go after the creepy ex, I'm gonna hang here with the hot chick.
Sam: Dude. Why do you always get to hang out with the girls?
Dean: Because I'm older.
Sam: No, screw that. We settle this the old-fashioned way.
(Sam and Dean play Rock, Paper, Scissors. Sam does rock, Dean does scissors)
Sam: Dean, always with the scissors. (pats Dean on the shoulder and makes a pouty face)
Dean: Shut up, shut up! Two outta three!
(Sam sighs and does rock again and Dean does scissors again; Sam covers Dean's hand with rock)
Dean: Gah!
Sam: Bundle up out there, all right? (pushes Dean out)
Haha, I love the fact that this the old-fashioned way is to play Rock, Paper, Scissors! As much as I’d love to see Dean trying his moves on Madison I was actually happy that Sam won, and the fact that he wanted it so bad made it clear that he was already attracted to her.
It wasn’t exactly a secret that she found him attractive too, and dumping her underwear in front of him ought to have made it clear to him too. LOL, but I loved how he was all shy and didn’t know what to do or how to act.
Dean: Let me guess. You're sitting on her couch like a stiff trying to think of something to say.
Oh, Dean. I love how he kind of pushes Sam to make a move on her.
I loved that Madison got Sam to watch a soap opera, though that should have been a big tip-off to everyone that she’s evil. ;p
Lol, and Sam’s ‘bitch’ comment was just priceless.
Sam: Can I ask you a question? I, it's, it's a little personal.
Madison: You've seen my entire underwear collection. Go ahead.
I like this girl, she has a sense of humour.
Sam: You're unusual.
Madison: Unusual like... (makes crazy sign) unusual?
Sam: No. No no no. Unusual like... impressive.
Madison: You think so?
(Sam’s phone rings.)
Sam: Sorry, (answers his cell) Hey.
Dean: I found him.
Sam: Good, don't keep your eyes off him.
Dean: (looks at stripper) Oh, my eyes are glued. Look Sammy I gotta let 'cha go I uh (clears throat) I don't wanna miss anything. (gives the stripper a dollar and hangs up his cell)
Haha, oh, Dean, you’re such a dog. This scene gave me another flashback to Dark Angel though. The one where Max had to give him a lap dance.
(Shit, I almost wrote Sam instead of Max! 0:)
I really liked the shot of Dean waiting outside by the dumpsters, panning from the moon and down to where he was standing. Then a very similar shot to the one in Croatoan where he was checking his gun, and I believe it was even the same gun.
So I was right about Madison being a werewolf, I still didn’t trust Glen though.
Sam was so disappointed when Dean told him about Madison, and when he noticed the cut on her arm, awww.
Madison: What's going on?
Sam: I'm not going anywhere. And neither are you.
I liked the fact that Madison didn’t know she was a werewolf. From the limited experience I’ve had with the genre that is the point, that these people don’t know what they’re doing.
Dean: (to Madison) How you doin'? My head feels great. Thanks.
Oh, Dean.
Sam: Maybe she doesn't really know she's changing. You know maybe, maybe when the creature takes over she blacks out.
Dean: Like a really hot Incredible Hulk?
Lol, Dean.
Sam comparing himself to Madison, that she’s not evil by choice, for once I actually think he made a valid argument with regards to his destiny, on how to view other people/monsters.
When Sam talked about the werewolf that bit Madison, I knew that had to be Glen. I never really doubted that he was a werewolf.
I liked that Sam tried to explain things to Madison, to make her feel a bit at ease. Not that she felt any safer, but it was a nice scene.
Sam did a good job locking her in the closet when she turned.
And I was right again! Glen was the second werewolf.
The hooker must have been freaked out, first she’s nearly killed and then she sees a murder.
Though Glen didn’t seem to be aware of his condition either. Dean looked like he felt sorry for him, he looked kind of lost as Glen died.
So Sam leaved Madison behind in the wrecked room. I liked the way they did his exit. She just turns around and he’s gone.
Madison: You know for a stakeout, your car's a bit conspicuous.
Oh, boys. I love the Impala, but she does have a point.
I love that Dean’s honest with her, when she asks what they’re doing there. And that she invited them up to wait with her, because she understood what was at risk, and what she’d done.
Dean wasn’t stupid, when Sam and Madison were talking he picked up on the fact that she liked Sam a lot too.
Lol, Sam’s girls never thank Dean.
Dean: So I'm just gonna... head back to the hotel...watch some pay-per-view... or somethin'. (leaves while putting his fist in the air)
Madison: That was smooth.
(while Dean is leaving the room)
Sam: He means well.
Madison: You mean, he thinks you're gonna get laid.
Lol, oh Dean.
And then the scene. It didn’t do much for me, but then again I am a Dean girl, and I might be the only girl on the planet who didn’t go crazy for Sam’s muscles, but each to their own. The final shot of them just sleeping was nice though.
I was pretty sure she was still a werewolf, poor Sam.
His desperation in wanting to save her. Dean doing the best he can in the situation.
Dean: Sammy, I don't think we got a choice here any more.
Sam: What?
Dean: I hate to say it, she's a sweet girl, but part of her is...
Sam: Evil?
Dean: Yeah.
Sam: Yeah, that's what they say about me, Dean. So me you won't kill but her you're just gonna blow away.
So they pick her up and bring her home. Sam doing what he can, but Dean cuts in and tells her the truth, which I think was the right thing to do at that point. She deserved to know.
Madison: Sam, I'm a monster.
Sam: No, I'm gonna save you.
Madison: You tried. I know you tried.
Madison pleading with Sam to kill her was so sad, and kind of mirroring Sam asking Dean to kill him if he turns. Very well done, and devastating.
When Dean takes the gun away from Madison and the song starts playing. So sad, he wants to spare Sam from having to do it, but Sam knows that he can’t let Dean do it. It was such a devastating scene.
Leaving Dean alone, the single tear and the jerk as the shot is fired.
It broke my heart.
I didn’t cry, but I could have.
People have wondered if Sam actually shot her since we didn’t get to see it. I know he did, the reason the camera stayed with Dean was because this was a huge moment for Dean as well. While Sam had to shoot Madison, Dean sees a last shred of innocence taken away from his baby brother as well, I think, as realizing that if Sam does turn, he will have to kill him.
Complaints about the werewolf makeup have been made too. I think Glen was a little hairier, but anyway I didn’t really mind. I think what they had done was cool, and if they’d gone all hairy I think it would have taken something away from the show… just my two cents.
