While other studios are cutting back on big budget tentpole films, MGM has decided to do the exact opposite and recently announced a slate of tentpole films budgeted in the 150 to 200 million dollar range. Among those, which include TERMINATOR 4 and a sequel to the THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR, is the one prequel most of us have been waiting for ever since we first insinuated homoerotic sexual tension between a lithe hobbit named Frodo and a husky hobbit named Samwise Gamgee. That's right, not only is MGM planning to make J.R.R. Tolkien's prequel to the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, THE HOBBIT, but according to the article on Variety, they're planning "one or two installments" that they'll be teaming with New Line to produce and that they hope will be directed by Peter Jackson. The main point of contention that had prevented THE HOBBIT from coming to the big screen was a complex rights issue between MGM and New Line that, for all intents and purposes, wouldn't be resolved until the universe caved in on itself but someone apparently worked some magic to clear up that issue. The only question now is, are they really willing to move forward if Jackson doesn't return to direct? What do you guys think?

PJ will direct it. He´s said so. *nods*

Apart form that, I tend to be horribly indifferent as to whether this book is made into a movie or not! What is WRONG with me!?! Now if it was The Silmarillion...!

Well, here's hoping.

I do kind of get you. The Hobbit was a childrens book, and had a different feel than LOTR, so it'll be a challenge for the people who make it. Also, LOTR has the more engaging story, but then again, it's Middle Earth! :D

I haven't read the Silmarillion. *hides in shame*

The Silmarillion is long and full of Elven discriptions. Good, but Looooooooong.
Hope that The Hobbit will be made, and PJ said he'd direct it. He better not turn his back to the book. Even though it is a childrensbook, it can get scary. With Smaug. #getting high hopes now!#

I hope PJ will direct this one.

I read in passing something about the Sarah Connor's Chronicles, is this what T4 is about? If so, cool! It better be better than T3, which I'm sorry but *pinches nose*.

Joe read The Hobbit as a kid and said he had hoped they'd done this one first, I'll give him the good news. :)

No, as far as i know the Sarah Connor Chronicles is going to be a TV show. T4 will pick up where T3 ended as far as I know.

I think they should have done this first as well, just for shere continuation, but I adore LOTR, so am looking forward to this.

Ahh! I see. Eh, I just wish they could somehow bring Edward Furlong back. Fat chance.

I never got into LOTR (yet) to be honest, but I will watch this one.

I was never a big Furlong fan, think Nick Stahl did a good job with what he had to work with.

Never got into as in you've never seen it, or wasn't engulfed by it all?
If you haven't seen them, you really should.

I know some people were scared away by the hype.
I really recommend them though, it's truly a viewing experience not to be missed.

Yes, I try to avoid hype, more times than not. But now I'll try to make time to watch it. I don't wanna be the only one who hasn't seen it! ;)

It would be awesome to see on the big screen.
I'm thinking one movie would be enough though.

I loved the Hobbit cartoon as a kid so that's something i'd love to see as a movie. Cartoon Gollum will always freak me out much more than any movie version though, lol. The animation was just freaky! But I know they could do awesome things with Smaug, and my friend's a dragon freak so she'd *love* that.

As for T4.. I guess it's true that the Terminator *just* *won't* DIE! lol.. I dunno, I just was disappointed with T3 so I hope they don't waste all our time again.

I loved Thomas Crown Affair.. wonder if they'll get Pierce and Rene again. I'm a huge fan of heist movies. :)

I haven't seen the cartoon, but I've seen pictures. Totally understand that Gollum freaked you out, that was on freaky drawing.
Would be cool to see what they'd do with Smaug.

Heh, I didn't mindt T3 that much really. Not that I think it was great, just okay. I think they should have stopped at 2, leave the audience to think about what happened next.

I haven't seen the first one. Will have to check it out if I get a chance.
