Sorry it took so long, but I can finally give you my review of 'Simon Said'. So kind of some of you guys to keep asking me for my review. :)
Anyways, like I briefly touched on in my last review, some people seemed to have some issues with this episode, I'll touch on that a little as I go along. As for me, I loved this episode. I absolutely adored it. I still can't believe the greatness that is season 2 of 'Supernatural'. Kripke, I bow down to your greatness!
Now, let's continue to a more detailed review:
Anyways, like I briefly touched on in my last review, some people seemed to have some issues with this episode, I'll touch on that a little as I go along. As for me, I loved this episode. I absolutely adored it. I still can't believe the greatness that is season 2 of 'Supernatural'. Kripke, I bow down to your greatness!
Now, let's continue to a more detailed review:
The only thing I really knew about this episode in advance was that Sam's visions would return, this turned out not really to be a spoiler since anyone with a brain could figure that out just by watching the recap. And for those who were in doubt, is there really any doubt anymore about that John told Dean the secret about Sam?
As much as I loved the music intros that they ended last season with and began this one with I don't really miss them when they're not there, the recaps do their job just as well withouth it, however I do believe they'll make a return at some point.
Now for the actual episode. I liked the first scene, my fave bit however was how it went from that to being revealed as Sam's vision. The blood hitting the sink, the flashing images and then the dirty sink in the rest room. This show is really good at the shot transitions, and have been really imaginative at times, which I just love. I don't expect everyone to pay attention to this stuff, it's just the film student in me that loves those details.
Sam: Plus, it could have some connection with the demon. My visions always do.
Dean: That's my point! There's gonna be hunters there. I don't know if, if going in there and announcing that you're some supernatural freak, with a demonic connection's the best thing, okay?
Sam: So I'm a freak now?
Dean: You've always been a freak.
Awww, I do agree with Dean on this one though. Not about Sam being a freak, but telling the people at the Roadhouse about Sam's visions. They barely know these people, and this is a pretty big secret.
Never challenge someone who's grown up in a bar to play the only video game in the place.
Can I just say that when the boys entered, the other people in the bar. If we take a step away from the fangirlieness for a moment; put yourself in Jo's shoes, these are the kind of guys that have been hitting on her... probably since she got boobs, can you really blame her for throwing herself at Dean?
I'm still not feeling anything between Jo and Dean, and in this episode he kind of treated her like the girl who'd be a friend of your little sis or bro. Like he couldn't be bothered. But the guy had other things on his mind, so it's understandable.
For some reason I'm not liking the idea of Dean with a blonde, though, Sam neither, well he could go with a dark blonde, but for some reason I'm thinking Dean should be with a brow og black haired girl. I have no idea why I think so...
ASH! Dr. Badass. Need I say more. I like him.
I don't really want to speculate on what he was up to before the boys came knocking at his door though.
The boys need to buy a new laptop, it's an important tool. Or were they so attached to the old one that they need some time before they buy a new one?
Their minds have been on other things though, and I'm thinking this is the writers excuse to bring them back to the Roadhouse.
Ahaha!! The pain on Dean's face when Jo puts on the REO song. I thought I was going to die, but at the same time telling him to get the hell out of there.
Jo: What?
Dean: REO Speedwagon?!
Jo: Damn right, REO. Kevin Cronin sings it from the heart.
Dean: He sings it from the hair--there's a difference.
Oh, how I loved this. I liked the interaction between the two. And Jo was shut out again, begging to help and Dean keeping it withing the family. I like that Ellen intimidates Dean a bit, though she'd probably scare me a bit too. I like her character, but I doubt I'd ever really be comfortable in the presence of someone like her.
Dean: Besides, if I ran off with you I think your mother might kill me.
Jo: You're afraid of my mother?
Dean: I think so.
Loved the way Dean said that. Don't ask me why, but I loved it.
Which now brings me to the scene. Will have to give you a play by play, like last week:
The boys say good bye to Jo and head for the door, the music fades and a lonely voice takes over singing the lyrics.
Me: Wait... Who's singing? Is it..?
The scene cuts to DEAN in the impala SINGING!
Me: Dean! Dean is singing!! Oh, holy Kripke! Dean is singing!
I have no words for my fangirlie squee at that moment. Seriously. I loved it! And will probably wear that part of the episode out very soon.
Now, some people have commented saying that Dean wouldn't know the lyrics to this song since he hated the band. Well, my answer to that is simply this, he knew enough about the band to identify the song, so he's obviously heard it before. Me, I cannot stand Britney Spears, Paris Hilton of the Backstreet Boys, but for some reason the lyrics to their songs creep into my brain and find a place to stay, so I do remeber a few of them. It's not impossible the same thing happened with Dean and this song, or REO in general, just my two cents.
And on the ever going debate on Jensen's ability to sing I'll only say this; I'll admit it's not perfect, but I like his voice, he could serenade me anytime. My ears aren't as finely tuned as some people's are though. And my second point is that considering what kind of artists are out on the market today, can you really honestly tell me that Jensen doesn't have a better voice than any of them?
Back to the show. Sam cuts the fangirlie squeeage short, and we have to return to the plot. And we're treated to some exposition, by now we've all figured that it's a kid with powers involved and that we might be dealing with a new Max aka. pastie faced psycho.
Dean is the smart one again, and finds out how they might find out where to find Andy.
Coffee shop. Now, I didn't realise this until I checked out her stats later, but Tracy was played by Chiara Zanni who played the tourguide at the beginning of X2, and was the voice of Jubilee in 'X-Men: Evolution'. My fandoms collide again, yay.
Anyway, we always love the boys in suits, don't we?
A lot of people have commented that they thought Webber looked like Elijah Wood. I can't really see it, maybe something around the eyes, but that's about it. It's not obvious to me.
The van! The van! I'm sorry, but I'll have to agree with Dean on this one, that's a nice van.
Dean: What's wrong?
Sam: Nothing.
Dean: Sam, you look like you're sucking on a lemon.
Dean gets the best lines, heh. Okay, so we get Sam angsting about his powers, and I do understand where it's coming from I really do, but he really is focusing on the negative here. Yeah, they've met one person like Sam thus far who turned bad, and seriously who can really blame Max for snapping? I get that Sam is worried that something might push him, but he seems to be forgetting that he does have support. Dean's words in trying to comfort him might not be getting Sam like they used to, sadly.
Another great moment. Dean following Andy. Poor Dean looked so nervous when Andy stopped and went to talk with him, but relaxed a little as soon as his baby was getting so praise.
Andy: This is a cherry ride.
Dean: Yeah, thanks.
Andy: Man, a ’67. Impala’s best year, if you ask me. This is a serious classic.
Dean: Yeah. You know, I just rebuilt her, too. Can’t let a car like this one go.
Andy: Damn straight. Hey, can I have it?
Dean: Sure, man!
I was laughing so hard and at the same time being paniced that Andy was stealing the Impala! Dean gave away the Impala!
It was clever of Sammy to pull the alarm to stop the doctor from doing what he was gonna do. Quick thinking there, kid.
And when Sam sees Andy driving by in the Imapala, just priceless.
Dean: He full-on Obi-Wan'd me. It's mind control, man.
Star Wars referance! Gotta love that! And from Dean!
Okay, I kind of knew it was coming, but I jumped when dr.guy was hit by the bus.
Awww, Dean had his hand on Sam's back trying to comfort him. It was a little thing, but made me very happy. I've started to give up on a hug, so I'll take what I can get.
And I loved it when they found the Impala.
Dean: I'm sorry, baby. I'll never leave you again.
And he's checking her for damage. I can totally respect his love for that car. I would be the same if I had a car like that. At this point I kind of thought Dean would be ready to kill Andy, but he seems to be more in awe of the guy. I like it though, Sam keeps pushing, and Dean keeps looking for other options. It makes sense now, that he really hopes that Andy isn't evil, but Dean does have a really good antenna for these things, as we've seen in the past, so he knows to trust his gut.
Dean did get his payback though in breaking in to Andy's van. I love the fact that Dean looks at the interior, casing everything while Sam goes straight for the books. Dean babbling about it not being a killers lair and then looking at the tiger, just so great. I don't think Dean would ever paint something like that on the Impala, but he's thinking about getting a van as backup just so he can copy Andy. Boys and their toys. Heh, and I loved 'Moby Dick's bong'. Lol.
Dean's eating, didn't look like he was enjoying the food, and his comment made that even more clear. Sam's busy with the papers, such a busy bee.
And now comes one of my other fave bits in this episode; Andy and his powers.
Andy: Why are you following me?
Sam: Well, we're lawyers. See, a relative of yours has passed...
Andy: Tell the truth!
Sam: That's what I...
Dean: (deadpan) We hunt demons.
Andy: What?
Dean: Demons, spirits, things your worst nightmares wouldn't even touch. Sam here, this is my brother...
Sam: Dean, shut up!
Dean: (through gritted teeth) I'm trying! He's psychic. Kinda like you, well not really like you, but see, he thinks you're a murderer, and he's afraid that he's gonna become one himself, cause you're all part of something that's terrible, and I hope to hell that he's wrong, but I'm starting to get a little scared that he might be right.
Oh, poor Dean. Love that Andy's powers didn't work on Sam, but the way Dean was rambling on, like a five year old trying to tell his parents something really important, just too funny. Trying so hard not to spill his guts.
After thinking about it for a while, when Dean says: 'but I'm starting to get a little scared that he might be right.' It could just be his reaction to what Andy's making him do. Dean's used to putting on a different personality to get information from people. Never telling them the truth unless he has to, so this must be freaking him out. Just a speculation on my part.
Like I said before I love that Andy's powers don't have an effect on Sam, and it does kind of make sense. Dean standing in the background while Andy and Sam argue, good, it was time Sam got some action time.
Can I just say that I love it when Sam get's visions purely for the fact that Dean has to steady him afterwards. It's the closest thing we'll be gatting to a hug, so I'm gonna enjoy it every freaking time it happens.
Poor Andy seems a bit freaked out when he hears what Sam has to say post-vision. Not exactly what he would have expected to happen that day, or any day... I love the talke he and Sam have about their powers though. I like Andy, he has everything he needs and isn't going to use his powers for bad, doesn't mean he's going to be a saint, but at least he's not evil. The scene down in the archives room is just great.
Andy: These aren't the droids you're looking for.
Another Star Wars referance. You just have to love that, and Dean's 'Awesome' just made the whole thing that much better. He is in touch with his inner fan boy.
And the sopa opera moment; an evil twin. Andy's reaction just says how absurd it must feel to him. It is afte all only something that happens in cheesy soaps.
Andy: I have…an evil twin.
Webber being the twin didn't come as a big suprise, but earlier I thought it was Tracy who was responsible for some reason. Liked this twist though.
Sam's visions seem to be getting very intense, it wouldn't suprise me if he'll get nosebleeds because of them later in the series. I also think Sam has to try to gain som control over his visions. We don't know if it can be done, but seing as he has some telekinetic ability buried deep as well it might be beneficial for him. I still think it scares him to much though, so I don't think he'll try to gain control over them anytime soon, but I donhope he'll try at some point.
You know, I love it when Dean gets to kick ass, but I also liked the fact that Sam had to take control of the situation this time around. Even though he did get knocked out, but we got him punching Webber through the car window which was awesome.
And Dean with the rifle! I want to see him use that thing again! And get proper screen time with it too. Sniper!Dean.
Andy: Are you really this stupid? You, you learn you got a twin, you call them up! You go out for a drink. You don’t start killing people!
In the end it was Andy who had to take Webber down. It sucks that he had to shoot him, but that was the whole theme of this episode, so it had to go down like that. Andy will be broken now, especially now that he can't confide in Tracy, but I really hope he'll be able to move on to something good. I would love to see him again sometime later though, maybe helping the brothers or just randomly running into them. Would just be fun to see him again.
Sam and Dean's discussion about killing. I do believe that everybody is capable of murder if they're pushed far enough, but Sam is focusing on the wrong thing here. He's so fucosed on this as it applies to the gifted kids. I'm sorry to say it, but Dean is much closer than Sam to actually crossing that line. If we look back at 'Faith (#1.12)' and 'Nightmare (#1.14)' the proof of that is staring us right in the face, and the fact that he had a rifle aimed at Webber doesn't exactly make him any better than Sam or Andy.
Back at the Roadhouse, is it wrong that I wanted to kick Sam for spilling his guts? I know Ellen is supposed to be one of the good guys, but news like that could send the hunter community spinning. All Sam had to tell her was about the link between the demon and the fires on a childs 6 month birthday. That's all he had to say. Dean tries to hold back again when Ellen asks how many of the gifted kids are dangerous. They've only met two that have been a threat out of Kripke knows how many, I could be wrong, buut I'm thinking Sam is starting a panic to soon.
I have a thought about Webber's powers though. And the fact that the demon didn't visit him on his 6 month birthday. I'm thinking that the demon got to him, to use him as a tool to break Andy. Andy says that Webber showed up 8 months earlier, Andy had had his powers for about a year when this episode took place. I'm thinking the Demon visited Webber and pushed him, telling him about Andy and driving him crazy, wanting to use him to push Andy as well. I don't know I'm just speculating, my point is that Webber wasn't supposed to have these powers but somehow the demon gave them to him and used hi to get to Andy.
All in all I adored this episode. I'm really having a hard time pinning down a favourite this season. Guess I'll just have to wait and see what the next episode brings.
On a final note, was it just me or did it sound like Jensen was sick in this episode. He seemed like he was getting over a cold. I noticed the same thing in Wendigo when I saw that as well. You can't really see it, but listen to his voice.
As much as I loved the music intros that they ended last season with and began this one with I don't really miss them when they're not there, the recaps do their job just as well withouth it, however I do believe they'll make a return at some point.

On a final note, was it just me or did it sound like Jensen was sick in this episode. He seemed like he was getting over a cold. I noticed the same thing in Wendigo when I saw that as well. You can't really see it, but listen to his voice.

Date: 2006-10-30 11:24 pm (UTC)The way Dean answered Jo about being scared of his Mom was hilarious! Like I can imagine him thinking, "Yes, she can and will kick my ass if she had to". LOL. :)
I also noticed how Dean reacted, something along the lines of "uh-oh, busted!" when he called Sam a freak. And then just sort of brushes it off with a laugh telling him 'he's ALWAY been a freak. You *know* he knows something. And it's getting harder and harder for him to hide it.
It was a major mistake on Dean's part to spill the beans, Ellen looked truly freaked. I think they're setting it up so that Jo will want Dean more and show it and Ellen will step in to protect her daughter.
And OMGZ, Dean singing! I was laughing and squealing so loud, I have to watch a second and third time to truly enjoy it. I thought he was holding back a little, on the singing, but it makes sense what you said about him having a cold.
Awesome review, like always. I do so enjoy them. ^_^

Date: 2006-10-31 09:22 pm (UTC)Yeah, he seemed kind of unaware of his statement until Sam took offence by it. Dean has called Sam a freak before, but I think the subject is extra sore for them both now.
Ellen did look freaked. I like her, I just don't know if I fully trust her yet. Dean should have pummeled Sam to silence, and Sam shouldn't have told her about the kids abilities.
I was laughing and squealing so loud Me too. I've seen the episode three times, and that part a couple more, love it every time.
And yeah, he could have been holding back because of the cold. I still loved it though.
Thank you, glad you're liking them.

Date: 2006-10-31 07:06 pm (UTC)Dean singing in the car. I had a teen girl moment, damn that boy can sing!!
I also though Webber looked like Elijah Wood for a moment I thought it was him, my eyes fool me sometimes.
LOl, Dean talks about his car as I do about my laptop..haah
Great review, just great :)

Date: 2006-10-31 09:27 pm (UTC)I agree about Jo, but I kind of rambeled about that in my review, so won't repeat myself.
Dean singing now ranks among my absolute favourite moments in the entire series.
Really? I don't see it? Is it the eyes? Because that's the only thing I could kind of see some similarity.
Haha, well, who can blame Dean for loving that car? Really? If I had a car like that I'd probably act the same way.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.

Date: 2006-10-31 09:56 pm (UTC)Webber didn't look like Elijah Wood to me either. Didn't even cross my mind.
I'm pretty sure we are getting closer to the point when Dean starts killing humans, too (the Demon-possesed guy in 'Devil's Trap' doesn't count, that was straight self-defense). The rifle scene here (the hot hot hot Sniper!Dean - sorry, i just had to say that) and then him disregarding the fact that Andy killed Webber almost immediately as not a big deal and a right thing to do (well, it probably was the only option at the moment, but that's not the point). And when Dean actually gets to that stage, we will surely see the backlash in Sam's reaction. That's going to be some awesome drama.
I'm not really that sure about your 'Demon gave Webber the powers to get to Andy' theory. I'm not discounting it here, I guess I just need more facts to convince me. So far it seems like too much bother, and a pretty roundabout way to the intended purpose. But if it check out, more power to you, girl ;)
The hunter's reaction to Sam's powers is bound to be interesting, you are right on that.

Date: 2006-11-01 05:28 pm (UTC)So glad I'm not the only one who didn't think he looked like Elijah.
The whole Dean-killing-humans thing is a dark path. I agree about him killing MaleMeg, it was for survival. And I would probably have felt the same way if he had shot Webber. It was to save people. It will always be a subject for discussion, but how is really what Dean was going to do any different than what a SWAT team does?
I am very curious about how this will develop through the series though.
Yeah, it was just a thought, not sure I believe it myself. It was just that Andy seemed like such a good guy. Most people with his powers would use it for personal gain. Guess we'll just have to wait and see what this new bit on information brings.
Am curious how that will turn out. Am just thinking with hunters like Gordon out there, there might be some that'll end up viewing Sam as a threat.

Date: 2006-11-13 06:33 am (UTC)So you haven't seen the serial killer one yet right? And I really enjoyed the last one with Linda Blair since i'm such an Exorcist fan. :)

I am loving the writing, so many exellent quotes.
I saw it on friday, really enjoyed it. I never liked the Exorcist, but I do get a kidk out of the referance. :)

Totally agree. Anytime they can get a horror movie legend to do a guest spot I'll be a happy camper. I think they shoulc get Robert Englund for a part, that's be awesome!
