Supernatural - 206 - No Exit
Nov. 16th, 2006 11:27 pmYeah... I know I'm late with this, but I've been really busy so here goes.
My review:
Okay, seriously. this episode ranks high for me on the creepy list. This one actually creeped me out! Slimey stuff (which I do have issues with in general) coming from nowhere, creepy sounds. *shudders* If I was that girl I'd be going to a friends house, I would not have stayed there.
Dean: Young girl got kidnapped by an evil cult.
Sam: Yeah, and does this girl have a name?
Dean: Katie Holmes.
Oh, Dean. This is why I adore you. And I just love them for making a joke out of that. Seriously, I've been waiting for it, think this is the first one, you know besides all the vids of Tom's couch jumping. But I mean an actual joke about it in a somewhat serious show.
Jo: (about school) I didn't belong there! I was a freak with a knife collection!
Is it weird that I fail to see how having a knif collection will make you a freak in College?
I knew Jo was gonna have a bigger part this time around as soon as I heard the argument and what it was about. Oh, and I loved Dean's reaction to it, wanting to see a catfight, seriously, what is it with guys wanting to watch girls argue?
Oh, and the tourist family! I almost died! Too funny, and the look on Dean's face after they left. I thought I was gonna die.
Jo: Take it, I won't bite.
Dean: No, but your mom might..
I did like that Jo had brains enough to see the pattern, and actually make a pretty good file about it too. At least she has an eye for the hunt and can spot where something's up. Dean seemed to be impressed as well, heck he had to be if he thought Ash was the one who'd put it together.
Where was Ash in this episode btw?
Is 'snaking' some new word for stealing? It's popped up twice in this season so far, and I get that it means stealing. It's just the first time I've heard it used in that context before.
The boys checking out the flat was fun. Dean and his snarkyness can't help but love that.
Dean: I think I know what we're dealing with here. It's the Stay Puft Marshmellow Man.
LOL!
And then Jo enters, and Sam has to accept a smaller role for the rest of the episode. Which I did not like to much, Dean is the only one who's alowed to steal Sam's screentime!
It was funny though, the look on the boys faces when they realise it's her and Jo pretending she's Dean's girlfriend. (Come on, who wouldn't?) That owner-guy had to be blind not to notice that they were not on the level as a couple.
The look on Dean's face when Jo pays for the appartment, to good.
And when they argue about her being there, and Ellen calling. Sorry, but I wanted Dean to tell the truth, I knew it wasn't going to happen, but there's no wrong in hoping is there. And I gotta admit I liked Jo's happy face when he didn't tell Ellen.
What ring tone is that on Dean's phone!? Somebody tell me please! And he's got a new phone as well!
Jo's a smart girl, I gotta give her that. Having done all the research and trying to figure out as much as she could before coming out to the actual scene, and saving the boys a lot of work in the process.
I have to say I don't feel any chemestry between Jo and Dean, right now she's more kind of the bratty little sister or cousin that they can't get rid off and have to look out for all the time. I'll get into it more at the end, but I had to say something here with regards to Dean insisting that she not go out on her own.
Jo: So you gonna buy me dinner?
Dean: What are you talking about?
Jo: It’s just if you’re gonna ride me this close, it’s only decent you buy me dinner.
Dean: Oh, that’s hilarious.
I can see how Jo would think that Dean's view of her had something to do with her being a woman, but he isn't stupid, and I loved every thing he told her at this point; about her not knowing what it was all about, that she had a really good thing with her mother, and that nobody really chooses that kind of life. He basically said everything I would have said, and most of the things that worry me about her doing the job.
Dean: My dad started me in this when I was so young, I wish I could do something else.
Jo: You love the job!
Dean: Yeah, But I'm a little twisted.
Jo: You don't think I'm a little twisted too?
Why does Dean insist of sticking his hand in places where bad things can happen? I know this ghost was after blonde girls, but I was half expecting something to grab his arm or something. And when he pulls out that hair; eeeewwww. Seriously, why can't he ever find anything pleasant in those places?
Girl 2 gets nabbed, at least she tried to get out of the place, but sadly a little too late for her.
Okay, I know there was one other person on my flist who noticed this, but; Dean was sleeping like Marty McFly, the same position. I can't help it but that caused a little fangirlie squee. I love the 'Back to the Future' movies!
I liked Jo and Dean's little conversation about their dad's. I don't know if Dean really wanted to tell her anything, but somehow he came up with something, and it was a nice memory. I kind of wanted to see a flashback of it.
They found a celebrity ghost! That's just to good. And both boys seemed kind of exited by the fact too, like "yays, we get to kill a celebrity ghost!". Just amused me.
Cue the wall search. I really wished Dean hadn't said that thing about 'cleaning the pipes'. Everybody watching was thinking that exact thing, the look on his face said enough, I really think the writers should have scrapped that line.
Also, we all knew Jo was going to get nabbed the second she left Dean, well the second we got the m.o. of the ghost and she showed up we knew she'd be taken at some point. Her scream was lame though.
Dean's already freaking out about Jo going missing, and of course Ellen calls:
Dean: (answers the phone) Yeah.
Ellen: You lied to me. She’s there.
Dean: Ellen
Ellen: No, Ash told me everything. The man’s a genius, but he folds like a cheap suit. Now you put my damn daughter on the phone.
Dean: She’s gonna have to call you back, she taking care of... feminine business.
Ellen: Yeah, right. Where is she? Where is she?!?
Dean: Look, we’ll get her back.
Ellen: Get her back? Back from what?
Dean: The spirit we’re hunting, it took her.
Ellen: Oh my God.
Dean: She’ll be okay, I promise.
Ellen: You promise. That is not the first time I’ve heard that from a Winchester.
I had started to get a sneeking suspicion earlier in the episode, but that final line convinced me. From the first moment I knew there was never anything between Ellen and John, this is a scenario I found much more likely, that John had worked together with Ellen's husband and something had gone wrong.
Go Sam for figuring out where to go next. He needed one good thing in this episode as he got so pushed aside. Somebody told me it was because Jared needed some surgery on his arm, if that's the case I get it, but I don't want it to happen again.
Oh, how I hate when they shoot throught those little cracks in scary movies. I go on high alert and jump twice as high when something pops up in front of it. Gah!
I liked the idea og H.H. keeping the girls stored like that, just to show off how crazy he really was, Aloa did a good joob with her reaction to being trapped in that thing. Oh, and when H.H. started touching her, I would have totally freaked out. Good thing she always carries that knife around.
Two guys walking down a city street with a metal detector. Now you know what they're doing if you ever see anybody doing that. Lol.
Smart thinking though.
Dean digging, yay!
The boys save the day yet again. And Jo gets to see what it's like to be bait.
Sam: So, is this as glamorous as you thought it would be?
Jo: Except for all the pee-your-pants scares, yeah.
I hope she learned something from this, that she sees that there are other ways she can contribute to the hunter life than risking her own life.
I liked the fact that Jo asked the question that was probably on most people's minds about the salt and such, good way to tie up loose ends.
Jo: You ripped off a cement truck?
Dean: I'll give it back.
The car ride back to the roadhouse. I was just urging Dean to keep quiet. You do not try to reason or joke around with a mother after something like that. That trip should have been taken in complete silence. I did love Dean and Ellen in the front seat while Sam and Jo were in the back exchanging unconfortable glances.
I get Ellen's reaction, I really do. I also fully understand why she tried to keep this bit of information from Jo, but Jo needed to know it. What happened to her father, and thereby getting a better understanding about why her mother worries so much and how she thinks.
However, I do not think it was fair to blame the boys for any of it. And I refuse to believe that John just let Ellen's husband die. I'm sure he did everything in his power to save him, but was to late. The truth about what happened died with John though.
The boys had nothing to do with it, and up until this point Ellen seems to have been okay with that. She was able to look beyond what had happened with regard to the boys, but I get that this chain of events would set her off. Jo is the only thing she has left in the world and all she wants is for Jo to be safe.
Okay, so this review was a bit fragmented, but there you go. I liked this episode, I really did, but it ranks low, if not at the bottom, of this season's episodes.
As for Jo. Like I said before right now she fills more the role of a little sister or cousin that wants to tag along with them all the time. You can't really blame her though.
I like her character, but I'm not crazy about her. I do think she's selfish with regards to her mother, and like Dean said Jo has a lot of good things in her life which she should hold on to. If she wants to contribute to the hunter world she could continue doing research, but I think she sould stay out of the field.
As to the romantic thing. I'm not thinking about that right now, and if you guys really hate the thought that much write about it everywhere you can, heck send letters to Kripke. The Buffy fans managed to keep Spike alive for 6 seasons, so the Supernatural fans should be able to kill one romance before it starts. Just sayin'.
That's all for this review. Will write my review for 207 as soon as possible.
And here's the best part; when I'd finished watching it the first night and was in my bed going to sleep I heard scratching noises! Fucking scratching noises. Safe to say I had to tell myself it was nothig.

Date: 2006-11-17 12:40 am (UTC)Because they're secretly hoping it ensues into a full fledged catfight where they're grabbing at each other and tearing clothes off... ;>
And yea I agree that Jo is totally more like a kid sis.. I hope they don't try a relationship either.

Date: 2006-11-19 02:15 pm (UTC)I was just told that Kripke has dropped the thought of getting Dean and Jo togheter, so that's something.
She can turn into a cool character.

Date: 2006-11-19 05:01 pm (UTC)I know, it was just a little outcry on behalf of the Sam-fangirls, and I did mention that somewhere towards the end of my review. ;)

Date: 2006-11-17 05:27 am (UTC)And yeah, boo to Sam being almost absent from the ep. :( That really angered me.
Wonderful review, girlfriend. :D

Date: 2006-11-19 05:05 pm (UTC)And yeah, as I wrote, I'm convinced John did everything he could to prevent Ellen's husband's death. He would never put anybody at risk like that.
Like I wrote at some point, I think it was due to Jared needing some surgery on his hand, but that doesn't make it a good thing.
Thank you. :D

Date: 2006-11-17 07:11 am (UTC)I did not like jo in this episode not only just for the fact that she stole screen time from sammy she also was an idiot to get herself caught. I did not like dean and her bonding not because i'm jealous because i think dean needs a different girl not one who's going to blame him for her fathers death, i can totally understand it to an extent but it was wrong to be angry with the brothers it wasn't their fault at all that it happened. So all in all i loved the wit in the episode but truly hated scene stealing Jo.
Cold as ice was a perk to it too.

Date: 2006-11-19 05:08 pm (UTC)Well, I've been told now that Kripke will not be pairing Jo and Dean, he has listened to the fans, and maybe saw that they had no chrmistry. I don't mind them bonding and perhaps being friends, but I wouldn't want her to get such a big part again.
Though I can't see the boys returning to the roadhouse anytime soon after what happened.

Date: 2006-11-20 07:31 am (UTC)I'm glad that Dean is not going to have a relationship with jo, i don't hate hate jo but i don't think she's the right kind of girl for dean. Glad kripke is taking what we're saying and using it. I don't think they will after what happened but i think soon enough we'll see more of them again.

Date: 2006-11-20 12:54 pm (UTC)I agree, I'm not feeling anything between them. She works okay as a potential sidekick for an episode or two, but nothing more.
(no subject)
Date: 2006-11-21 07:23 am (UTC)Yeah i feel nothing at first he tried a little but then gave up and since then she's kind of given little hints that she liked him, he's not interested anymore which is good. Yeah she's a decent sidekick when jareds sick or has a broken hand for an episode but anything more than that and i will personally hunt kripke down and show him pain.

Date: 2006-11-19 05:11 pm (UTC)I did enjoy it, still think this season in general is great.
As for Jo, you'll be happy to know that it seems like Kripke has killed off the possibility of a romance between Jo and Dean, seems he does keep tabs on what the fans think.
(no subject)
Date: 2006-11-19 07:52 pm (UTC)And he has? Seriously? A week or so ago I think I read on someone's journal that he had confirmed their romance, but I certainly hope this is the one that's true. XD

Date: 2006-11-20 01:02 pm (UTC)Well, then that had to be from an old interview or something, because that was originally the plan. He's dropped it now though. The man does listen to his fans.
