roguem: (Dean Walk Alone)
[personal profile] roguem

Here are my reviews of Supernatural eps 14-18 of season 1. There may be some spoilers, but I will put up a warning If that happens so if anyone hasn't seen these episodes they won't get spoiled. However this fandom seems to consist mainly of spoiler whores so I doubt there's anything to worry about. ;)

NIGHTMARE

First off I was just so happy to be able to watch a new episode of the series after a nine week break. I think I would have loved this episode either way because of it.

Sam's precognitive dream leads the brothers to investigate a mysterious death which seems connected to a boy with the power of telekinesis.

I did really enjoy this episode, not onle were there several funny moments, but you got more under the skin of the brothers and we recieved some more information about their past. I think it was fun to see Sam's powers at work on another level. I doubt he enjoyed it as much though. ;p
I always love it when they show how protective the brothers are over eachother, but I think this is something Dean shows more and is more aware of as something he has to do, but then again he grew up looking after Sam, so I don't see how that would change.
As the picture would suggest, I did love it when they dressed up as priests, I've been seing icons of this all over the net and that made it extra hard not to be able to watch this episode, the pure humor of it was great.
Gun porn! Nuff said!

Okay, over to the spoilerish part:
The fact that Max's real mother had also been taken leads the clues in a different direction, I've gotten the feeling that most people thought it was after Sam, however now it would seem it's after the mother's of gifted children. I'm not sure, it's like in Faith when the pastor says that Dean has a mission and he's not finished yet, would suggest that it might be Dean that's going to be the hero at the end of it all. This show really knows how to mess with out theories, but that's why I enjoy it.
So even though I knew I had four more episodes with Dean after this I still got stressed when Sam had the vision of him dying, the whole death scene in itself was well done, as it again shows how set Dean is to protect people. And when Sam moved the cabinet with his mind, WOW, I'm loving it. At the end he says he didn't know how he did it. It was love, he cares for his brother, and as he said it was like an adrenaline rush.
I loved the fact that Sam finally got to see how it could have gone with his father, and finally sees that he didn't have it that bad. I'm not saying he had the perfect childhood, but there's no doubt in my mind that John loves his boys and would do anything to protect them. This episode showed us all how it could have turned out
It's obvious that Sam's powers make Dean a bit uneasy, but it's his brother and he's not going to let something like that break them apart, he does use the humor as a defense machanism when talking about it though. I think they need to have a real talk about all this soo, because this is much for Sam to carry around.

Some of my favourite quotes from the episode:

Sam: Well, don't look at me like that.
Dean: I'm not looking at you like anything...but I do gotta say you look like crap.
Sam: Nice...thanks.

Sam: You can’t tell me this doesn’t freak you out.
(long pause)
Dean: This doesn’t freak me out.

Max: All these people kept coming with, like casserole. I finally had to tell them all to go away. Because nothing says “sorry” like a tuna casserole.

Sam: Well, I know one thing I have in common with these people.
Dean: What's that?
Sam: Both our families are cursed.
Dean: Our family’s not cursed…we've just had our dark spots.
Sam: (chuckles) Our dark spots are pretty dark.
Dean: You’re...dark.

Dean: [Sternly, after Sam tells Dean to leave him alone with a gunman so he can talk to him] I am not leaving you alone with him, Sam.

Sam: Well, I’ll tell you one thing. We’re lucky we had Dad.
Dean: I never thought I’d hear you say that.

Sam: When Max locked me in that closet, that big cabinet against the door, I moved it.
Dean: You have a little bit more upper body strength than I give you credit for!

Sam: Aren't you worried, man, aren't you worried that I could turn into Max or something?
Dean: Nope. No way. You know why?
Sam: No. Why?
Dean: Cause you've got one advantage that Max didn't have.
Sam: What? Dad? Because Dad's not here, Dean.
Dean: No. Me. (He smiles.) As long as I'm around, nothing bad is gonna happen to you.
Dean: Now then, I know what we need to do about your premonitions. I know where we have to go.
Sam: Where?
Dean: Vegas.
(He smiles. SAM scoffs and walks out.)
Dean: What? Come on man! Craps table? We’d clean up!

THE BENDERS

Dean and Sam in uniform what can I say. I love it. State police. :D
I also loved the little gag about Sam liking the remake of 'Godzilla'.

Dean searches for Sam when he is kidnapped by a backwoods family who likes to hunt humans and use their body parts as trophies.

Another episode that helps us see the bond between the brothers, and how impotrant his family is to Dean.
I'm not really a big fan of the redneck/inbred/mutant people kidnapping people and killing them, in some cases eating them genre, I have to say. However I did really like this episode as it didn't play with being nast y and disgusting as almost always happens with this type of storyline.
So Sam gets snatched by the jokles, and Dean has to find him. In the scene where Dean discovers that Sam is missing, I have to say I really hated the music for that scene. It was like it was taken from a scary scene in a disney movie and just flung on here. They've had one or two misses with the score before in this series, so I really hope they manage to work it out, because I was distracted by the music and couldn't really get into the scene.
Dean got to show more of his sensitive side here I think, when talking to the policewoman and begging her to help him, again showing how much he values his family and how much he puts into his role as protector of Sam. He is so desperatly trying to hold on to his family and with Sam having been away for so long and now with their father gone he must be going through a lot.
I also liked how they actually showed us what was on the computer when Deputy Kathleen was looking for information about Sam; According to the computer readout, Sam was born May 2, 1983, in Lawrence, Kansas. He is 6’4”, 180-190 lbs., brown hair, brown eyes. Dean was born January 24, 1979 and "died" March 7, 2006.
Having the baddies be people was a good way to see how the brothers would handle the situation, their reactions to the fact that they're dealing with people was also very well done. "They're just people". The guys are so used to dealing with the paranormal that that idea never really crossed their minds.

Spoilers:
Dean having to get out of the cuffs, funny and stressful at the same time. Boy seriously needs to start carrying paper clips, just like he said, think he learned something from this whole thing.
When the Benders catch Dean and are torturing him, that was a good scene. I liked the set up of it all, Dean thinking the daugther of the house is a victim and trying to be nice, and she just ruins the whole thing for him. It was well done, and Jensen did great in those scenes. However, when Pa Bender tells his kid just to shoot Sam I would have expected Dean to go a bit more crazy. But then I started thinking about a scene in 'The Boondock Saints' (awesome movie) that has something similar going on, where the eldest brother does get angry, but he manages to not go all crazy. I think that's what they wanted to do here with Dean as well.
Again we gat to see another vrs of the sibling relationship with Kathleen's missing brother. This is what alows her to give Dean some slack, yet still saying she'll be arresting him when it's all over. When she learns that the Benders are responsible for her brother's death and how... well, even though they cut away I doun't doubt that she shot him. I sure as hell would have!

Quotes:

Mrs McKay: Tell the officers what you were watching on TV.
Evan McKay: Godzilla Vs. Mothra.
Dean: [excitedly] That's my favorite Godzilla movie. It's so much better than the original, huh?
Evan McKay: Totally.
Dean: Yeah.
[He nods towards Sam.]
Dean: He likes the remake.
Evan McKay: Yuck.
[Sam glares at Dean]

Deputy Kathleen: So you know his brother Dean Winchester died in St. Louis and was suspected of murder?
Dean: Yeah, Dean, kinda the black sheep of the family. Handsome, though.

Sam: I was looking for you.
Jenkins: Oh yeah?
Sam: Yeah.
Jenkins: Well, no offense, but this is a piss-poor rescue.

Sam: I'll be damned, they're just people.

Sam: Don't... call me... Sammy!

Jenkins: Ned Beatty time, man.

Deputy Kathleen: Your, uh… your cousin's looking for you.
Sam: Thank god. Where is he?
Deputy Kathleen: I, uh… I cuffed him to my car.

(trying to get out of handcuffs)
Dean: I gotta start carrying paperclips.

Dean: Have you seen them?
Sam: Yeah. Dude, they're just people.
Dean: And they jumped you? Must be getting a little rusty there, kiddo.

(looking at pictures of the family's victims)
Dean: I'll say it again. Demons I get, people are crazy!

Pa Bender: Only reason I don’t let my boys take you right here and now is there’s something I need to know.
Dean: How about “It’s not nice to marry your sister”?

Pa Bender: We never been that sloppy.
Dean: Yeah, well... don’t sell yourself short, you’re plenty sloppy.

Pa Bender: (while talking to a tied-down Dean) Are you a cop?
Dean: If i tell you, will you promise not to make me into an ashtray?

Dean: Eat me, no, no, no. Wait, wait, wait, you actually might.

Dean: You hurt my brother, I'll kill you, I swear. I'll kill you all. I will kill you all!

Dean: Never do that again.
Sam: Do what?
Dean: Go missing like that.
Sam: You were worried about me.
Dean: All I'm saying is, you vanish like that again, I'm not looking for ya.
Sam: Sure, you won't
Dean: I'm not.
Sam: So you got sidelined by a 13-year old girl?
Dean: Oh, Shut up.
Sam: I'm just saying, getting a little rusty there aren't you, kiddo?
Dean: Shut up.

SHADOW

Family reunion, finally we get to see John with the boys.

Sam has a reunion with a girl he once met, Meg, but it turns out that she is using the brothers to lure their father John to his doom.

I liked this episode a lot too, however, I would have made it longer if I could, possibly a two-parter. It was a big plot point I though to reveal Meg and have the boys fighting her off. I also would have made the ending longer, because I felt the suspense part was a bit to short, I was still ready for more action when the episode was over.
I really hate Meg though, I want Dean to take a hatchet to her face. Seriously.
I did love the uniforms in this one too, I know, it was a handyman thing, but still... Yum! Three episodes in a row with them dressed up in some way, gotta love that.
Was also nice to see an episode in a city enviroment, there has only been suburbs and villages so far, so it was nice to have it all happening in a new setting, and to be honest stuff like this would be less noticable in a city.
It was fun to finally see more of John, it wasn't much, but I was happy to see him.
I liked the scene in the bar, Dean doing his thing and getting a girls number out of it and Sam trying to get him to think business. Then Sam meets Meg and kind of gets sidetracked. He is however observant enough to see that there is something iffy about her. Dean thinks Sam is making up excuses and pesters Sam to ask Meg out and basically get some action! Priceless, I loved that.

Spoilers:
The scene before they go out to get Meg, thinking that this might be it, that they're finally at the end of their hunt. I felt so bad for Dean, when he's talking about wanting to be a family again, wanting things to be like before. I fully understand that Sam wants a normal life, and to finish his education, but this is one of those things that will be constantly tearing at Dean. Hopefully this time around they won't break contact like the did before if Sam does go on the road to live a normal life while John and Dean choose to keep hunting. They'll have contact but not be together all the time, and I think that would be the best solution in the end too. Still, I felt really bad for Dean.
Then ther was the scene where John was in their room waiting for them. Dean hurries over and gives him a hug. Awww. I was a bit worried Jonh wouldn't give Sam a hug too, but was so happy when they finally did hug. I totally get it though, they haven't seen eachother for almost 4 1/2 years it's not so suprising that they would be kind of weird around eachother, but as I said, I was so happy when they finally did hug. As I mentioned I was glad to see him, there's been so much going on that I think they all needed to see eachother, even if it was for such a brief time.
This is the part I felt they could have dragged out to a two-parter, those shadow demons are pretty horrible, so when Dean, John and Sam run from the room and down to their cars, it could have ended there with the demons still after them, next episode, could be of them running away and finding some way to fight them off, deling with some more family issues, but having said that I kind of get why they (the writers) did what they did.

Quotes:

Dean
: I’m just saying these outfits cost hard-earned money.
Sam: Whose?
Dean: Ours. You think credit card fraud is easy?

Landlady: You guys said you're with the alarm company?
Dean: That's right.
Landlady: Well, no offense, but your alarm's about as useful as boobs on a man.
Dean: Well, that's why we're here.

Sam: So, you talk to the cops?
Dean: Uh, yeah. I spoke to Amy a, uh, charming and perky officer of the law.
Sam: Yeah, and what did you find out?
Dean: Well, she’s a Sagittarius. She loves tequila, I mean...whew. Oh, and she’s got this little tattoo...

Dean: I talked to the bartender.
Sam: Did you get anything...besides her number?
Dean: Dude, I'm a professional. I'm offended that you would think that... (smiles and chuckles as he displays a napkin with her phone number)...All righty!
Sam: You mind doing a little thinking with your upstairs brain, Dean?

Dean: So to recap, the only successful intel we’ve scored so far is the bartender’s number.

Sam: I thought you were going to California.
Meg: I did. I came, I saw, I conquered.

Meg: Oh, and I met what's-his-name, something Michael Murray - at a bar.

Sam: I think there’s something weird going on here.
Dean: Yeah – she wasn’t even into me!

Sam: There's something I can't put my finger on about this girl.
Dean: Ha, but I bet you'd like to.

(over the phone)
Sam: Hi.
Dean: Let me guess - you're lurking outside that poor girl's apartment, aren't you?
Sam: No!...Yes...
Dean: You got a funny way of showing your affection.

Dean: (to Sam) Now, look, why don’t you go knock on her door and invite her to a poetry reading, or whatever it is you do, huh?

Sam: How'd you figure that out?
Dean: Give me some credit, man. You don't have a corner on paper chasing around here.
Sam: Oh yeah? Name the last book you read.
Dean: Ah, I called dad's friend, Caleb. He told me, all right?

Dean: Why don't you go up and deliver a private strip-o-gram?
Sam: Bite me.
Dean: Oh no, Bite her. Just don't leave any teeth marks... (Sam hangs up) Sam?

(tied up by Meg)
Sam: Wanna have fun? Go ahead. I'm a little tied up right now.

Sam: Go to Hell!
Meg: Baby, I’m already there.

John: I got there just in time to see the girl take the swan dive. (pause) She was the bad guy, right?
Sam and Dean: (in unison) Yes, sir.

Dean: Hey, Sam…?
Sam: Hmmm?
Dean: Next time you want to get laid…find a girl that’s not so buckets of crazy.

HELL HOUSE

Geek ghost hunters. Gotta love that! WWBD? Lol

Sam and Dean investigate the case of a maniacal ghost inhabiting a long abandoned Texas farmhouse known as "Hell House." They believe the ghost is the spirit of a deceased Depression-era farmer who killed his family, but they soon realize it is something far more powerful.

Another great episode, things are looking good. :) It wasn't as funny as people had made it seem, but I enjoyed it very much. I've always wanted them to run into some other ghost hunters and this was perfect, geeky Buffy fanboys thinking they're professionals. Also a nice nod to the Buffy fandom which I enjoyed. The creators have taken a lesson from 'the book of Joss Whedon' with this show, so I think it was fitting.
The pranks were also fun, getting to see the brothers playful side. Now as to who had the best prank, that I'll leave up to you guys.  ;)
The baddie in this episode was well done, the whole story behind it and how it evolved, I really liked that idea, I must say. There are a lot of stories made that way, so it was actually fun to see that the creators took a crack at that idea as well.
It was a more upbeat episode really, and I think that was needed as it's been a while.

Spoilers:
Itching powder and super glue. Lol. I loved that.
I'm gonna start saying "Dear Lord of the Rings" seriously!

Anywhoo, the I really liked the whole idea of this being something that was made up that turned into something real as I've mentioned. There are so many sites like that online, so it was an interresting twist to the whole thing.
And the referances to Blue Oyster Cult were good too, especially the cross that Dean is going crazy over.

Quotes:

Dean: What's the matter, Sammy? You afraid you gonna get a little Nair in your shampoo again, huh?
Sam: All right. Just remember you started it.
Dean: Oh, bring it on, baldy.

Dean: Most of those websites wouldn't know a ghost if it bit them in the pursqueeter.

Dean: Looks like old man Murdoch was a bit of a tagger during his time.
Sam: And after his time, too. The reverse cross was used by satanists for centuries, but the sigil of sulphur didn't show up in San Francisco until the '60's
Dean: Exactly why you never get laid.

Harry: What are you guys doing here?
Dean: What the hell are you doing here?
Ed: Uh, we belong here, we're professionals.
Dean: Professional what?

Dean: So, you guys ever seen a ghost before?
Ed: Once. We were investigating this old house and we saw a vase fall right off the table.
Harry: By itself.
Ed: Well, we-we-we didn't actually see it, but we heard it. And something like that, it changes you.

Dean: [after Same played a prank on Dean] Is that all you got? That is weak! That is bush-league!

Dean: Who you gonna call?

Dean: Hey, Sam, I dare you to take a swig of this.
Sam: What would I do that for?
Dean: I double dare you!

Dean: I hate rats.
Sam: You rather it was a ghost?
Dean: Yes

Sam: What the hell kind of spirit is immune to rock salt?!?

Ed: Sweet Lord of the Rings – run!!

Dean: I thought the legend said Mordecai only went after chicks.
Sam: It does.
Dean: Well that explains why it went after you, but why me?

Dean: Why don't you tell us about that house - without lying through your ass this time

Dean: People believe in Santa Claus, how com I'm not getting hooked up every Christmas?
Sam: 'Cause you're a bad person.

Ed: Harry, look at me, right here, okay? You are a ghost hunter, okay?
Harry: I know Ed, but I've never actually seen a real ghost before, okay. Like a real ghost, like an apparition...
Ed: This stuff right here, this is our ticket to the big time - fame, money, sex...with girls, okay? Be brave, okay... WWBD. What would Buffy do, huh?
Harry: What would Buffy do. I know, Ed, but she's stronger than me.

Dean: I barely have any skin left on my palm.
Sam: I'm not touching that line with a ten foot pole.

Sam: It kinda makes you wonder. Of all the things we've hunted, how many exist just because people believed in them?

Sam: Truce?
Dean: Yeah Truce. At least for the next 100 miles.

SOMETHING WICKED

Childhood memories and deja vu.

Sam and Dean battle a Shtriga, a witch that sneaks into childrens' bedrooms and sucks the lives out of them. Dean must relive his childhood when he remembers that he encountered the Shtriga years ago.

Another episodes focusing on the family and how they function together, I really liked this one as well though. We all know Dean has had to look after Sam, and that he feels responsible for him, and now we finally get to see it, and get an idea of how things worked when they were younger. In short we get an answer to why Dean is so protective of Sam and Always so willing to surrender to his father commands. I've never really questioned Dean's loyalty to his father or why he does it, but I liked seing this as it gave more insight to how his mind works.
Also enjoyed seing more of John, even though it was brief it was another chance to show the audience how much he cares for his boys, and how protective he is of them.
A very good episode for those who are interested in the charactes instead of the scares.

Spoilers:
As I've mentioned above this was another chance to see how John works, and I personally like him and think he did as good as he could with the boys. He gave up a case in order to get the boys to safety. Also by giving the case to Dean, John let Dean face his demons, and would help him get on with one aspect of his life. With this case young Dean also learned more about the dangers his father faced when he was out, and could fully understand how important it was for him to take the position of Sam's protector when John wasn't around.
I liked the similarites with the motell kids, the bond of big brothers having to look out for their kid brothers, think it helped the viewers to see that the only differance in Sam and Dean's childhood was the demons, there are a lot of regular danger in the world. The motel kids were basically a vision to what could have been, and it wasn't that different from what Sam and Dean had while growing up.
When they finally get the demon, and it actually goes after Sam again, Dean really gets the chance to redeem himself again, and I guess it was needed especially seeing as he put three extra bullits in its head after it was obviously dead.

Quotes:

Dean: Don't worry, I'm sure there's something in Fitchburg worth killing.
Sam: Yeah, what makes you so sure?
Dean: Well, because I'm the oldest, which means I'm always right.
Sam: No it doesn't.
Dean: Yeah, it totally does.

Sam: Dude, dude, I am not using this ID.
Dean: Why not?
Sam: Because it says Bikini Inspector on it!

Sam: It got away?
Dean: Yeah, Sammy, it happens.
Sam: Not very often.
Dean: Well I don't know what to tell you, I mean, maybe Dad didn't have his Wheaties that morning.

Sam: An old person, huh?
Dean: Yeah.
Sam: In the hospital? Whew, better call the Coast Guard!

Sam: I suprised you didn’t draw on him right there.
Dean: Yeah, well. First of all I’m not going to open up fire in a freaking pediatrics ward.
Sam: Good call.

Dean: You’ve heard a gun shot before?
Michael: Like in the movies?
Dean: It’s going to be a lot louder then in the movies.

Sam: Hey Dean, I'm sorry.
Dean: For what?
Sam: You know, I've really given you a lot of crap for always following Dad's orders. But I know why you do it.
Dean: Oh god, kill me now.

Sam: (Michael'll) always know there are things out there in the dark, never be the same, you know? Sometimes I wish that...
Dean: What?
Sam: I wish I could have that kind of innocence.
Dean: If it means anything, sometimes I wish you could, too.
