Cool, It's a great eppy.
Dean is awesome in it.
That dinner scene is good. Both of them really get a chance to show some depth in that scene.

I love their dad. You can tell Dean takes after him. ;)

But you can really tell their dad cares alot for them.

I totally agree.
I don't get all the John-hating going on. I really think he did the best job he knew how to do, and there's no doubt in my mind that he loves the boys.

You're missing a, "no, he did the best he could but he made mistakes." :)

Even the best parents in the world makes mistakes but John's were just a bit more ...um... severe. I can't say my parents ever gave me a gun when I was nine or expected me to protect my little sister in a situation where I would need a shotgun when I was ten.

So, yeah, I John made some mistake when raising his kids. But the fundementals of being a good parent, that it, he love his boys, he wants the best for them and he wants them to be safe, are there.

yeah, i would go for a "he's kind of a shitty father BUT he genuinely loves his kids and tried the best he could" option. :P

or maybe "maybe you suck but that doesn't mean i hate you", lol XD

Yeah, I was wondering about making a fifth option, but couldn't get it right. I'll keep this in mind the next time I'll be making a poll like this.

But then again, he gave the kids guns because he knew what was out there, and wanted them to be able to protect themselves when he wasn't there.
I mentioned in another post that many kids have a similar upbringing, where the parents work crazy hours, and the eldest is left in charge, I mean practically like Dean and Sam, but withouth the Demons... and guns. Though in some cases pretty young kids get to use shotguns and such.

I agree, for me there is no doubt that he loves them, and is trying the best he can.

I wasn't trying to imply that there was anything wrong with John teaching his boys to use a gun. John obviously knows what's out there and he's giving his children as much protection as he can. Another trait of a good parent. And there's really nothing wrong with kids learning how to use a gun, if you think of it as a tool, especially if you live on a farm or in the bush.

And there's nothing wrong with expecting the oldest to take responsibility for younger siblings and other chores.

It think my problem with how John raised Dean and Sam was not that he taught them how to shoot or expected Dean to watch or Sam, but that John had this choice. He could have taken his boys with him on hunts and left them in a motel room (which is what he did) or he could have left them behind with an adult while he hunted. What I've seen of the show, I think this is a reasonable choice. John conections to people who know about the supernatural and he trusts. He trusts Pastor Jim enough to leave Sam and Dean with him at the end of "Something Wicked". He trusts Missouri. There are probably others who owe him a couple favors.

So, I think John obviously had a choice, he choose to bring his sons along with him, he choose to leave them alone in the motel, he choose to leave Dean in charge aand Sam almost died. Dean messed up that night, he didn't do what he was told, and carried that guilt for 16-17 years, never realizing that it wasn't totally his fault. John needs to share some of the blame. Dean was in charge but, ultimately, it was John who put Dean in charge.

P.S. I'm a nursing student and I've just come out of a semester that focused heavly on ethics so that's where my head is at. Just so you know.

I totally see your points, they're really good. I'm just hung up on all the people hating him, I sometime go into overdrive when it comes to showing his good sides. :)

I agree that he could have left them with friends, instead of leaving them alone, but then again John might also have worried about having to ask all the time, I dunno. Also depends where in the US he was and how close to people who could watch them.

I also agree that he couldn't blame Dean for endangering Sam, not wholly anyway. I understand why John sent Dean after it when it happened again though.

No worries, I'm enjoying the discussion, always good to get different views on stuff like this. :)

I get bothered by people who treat John like a monster too. I think I enjoy John because he's flawed, that he's made mistakes but essentially a good person.

then again John might also have worried about having to ask all the time, I dunno. Also depends where in the US he was and how close to people who could watch them.

That's the problem with my little theory. It assumes that John was able to leave the boys in someone elses care. It's just as likely that he couldn't, though I haven't heard a compelling arguement for that yet.

Yeah, that's basically what my argument too. He's only human.

I see your point on that one, and I agree. If he had the possibility it would have been better to leave them with people.

I really like John. He did an awesome job with them and I think he did all that he could being an only parent and knowing what happened to their mom.

I like him too, so I get a bit extra protective when people start bashing him. I believe he did the best he could, now I don't agree with all his methods, but he tried.
There was no way he was going to let Mary's death just be left behind, he had a job to do.
