I went to see 'Slither' on thursday evening, so I figured I'd write a little bit about it.
Before I begin the official review, I have to tell you in what setting I saw this film. First of all I headed to the cinema alone, because none of the people I had asked wanted to go, or were busy with various school work. I'm not a big fan of watching scary movies at the cinema on my own, but figured this is part comedy and I managed 'The Sixth Sense ' on my own, so I'd be okay. It was also the last day it was showing at an ok time of the day (19:10), so I headed down to the cinema. I arrived a little after 19:10 and the guy at the counter thought I wanted a ticket to the next screening, but I got a ticket for this one. Now this made me think that there would be loads of people already in the theatre. What do I discover when I get there? It's empty, I am the only one there! This throws me a bit, but I remembered I was alone at the beginning of 'Hooligans', so other people would surely be coming. I find a seat, and surely a guy comes in during the trailers, but he leaves when they're over.
Yup, that's right folks, I was going to watch this all by myself!
Now, this is something that would usually make me very happy, not that it's ever happened before, but this was after all a scary movie. I'm not a whimp really, and I know this was a comedy as well, but come on! So yeah, for about the first ten minutes of the film I was a bit tense, but then I relaxed and figured I'd enjoy myself as I had the freedom to scream and cringe as much as I wanted without looking a fool. So that's what I did. ;)
Writer: James Gunn
Producers: Paul Brooks, Eric Newman
Actors:
Michael Rooker as Grant Grant
Elizabeth Banks as Starla Grant
Nathan Fillion as Bill Pardy
Genre: Horror
From Joblo.com: The sleepy town of Wheelsy could be any small town in America – somewhat quaint and gentle, peopled with friendly folks who mind their own business. But just beneath the surface charm, something unnamed and evil has arrived…and is growing. No one seems to notice as telephone poles become clogged with missing pet flyers, or when one of the town’s richest citizens, Grant Grant (Michael Rooker), begins to act strangely. But when farmers’ livestock turn up horribly mutilated and a young women goes missing, Sheriff Bill Pardy (Nathan Fillion) and his team, aided by Grant’s wife Starla (Elizabeth Banks), uncover the dark force laying siege to their town… and come face-to-face with an older-than-time organism intent on absorbing and devouring all life on Earth. Got all that? Sure you did. Now relax and have some fun!
THE REVIEW
I liked this movie, I felt like I was taken back to the 80s and 90s with regards to the storyline and some of the effects, but I have to say that is partly why I enjoyed it so much. It was funny and gross and scary and such a good time. It managed to be all those things at once and hit all the right notes. Now, it's not one of the best films ever, I think it took a little too long to really get started, but the buildup was good and totally worth it. I also have to admit that it was really fun to see Nathan Fillion on the big screen again, and I'm sure his character Bill really would've loved some help from River in ass kicking mode, lol. Anyways, this film is absolute fun, plain and simple. It gets in, does it scares and it's laughs, and gets out quick. As what it was meant to be, it was absolutely brilliant. It does its own thing, and it does it perfectly, and the result is pure entertainment.
There were a few things that suprised me, but in a good way. There are 2-3 things that always seems to happen in movies like this, especially with the kind of introductions we are given to the characters, and how the storylines unfolds, but none of them happened here, and it pleased me to no end. To some extent in the middle of all the crazyness they kept a little element of realism, or at least thinking how those things would most likely develop and/or turn out. So a big plus to James Gunn on that one!
You all should definetly go check it out! It's innocent fun, and yes you will be scared, grossed out and have a good laugh while watching it.

Date: 2006-05-07 09:29 am (UTC)As I stated above, any other genre and I would have loved it from the first second, I needed some time to get in to the feel of this film to enjoy it. And it was nice to be able to cringe, hide and swear without having to think about who might see me. ;p
Movie was great though. :)

Date: 2006-05-08 06:41 pm (UTC)The closest thing I can compare it to is 'Shaun of the Dead'... however those movies are very different. It's hard to explain, but they both have a nice dose of horror and humor. ;)
I have problems with Tom Cruise. I didn't like the first two M:I movies, so doubt I'll be seing this in the thatre.
