Finished reading the DaVinci Code yesterday.
Seriously? It isn't that good. It took me about 2 months to read! I see how it can be a fun movie, but it didn't keep me very engaged when I was reading it... it is a kind of 'National Treasure' or 'Sahara' kind of adventure. I'm curious about the film, but the book did not answer to all the hype, not for me anyway.
Meh...

Date: 2005-10-20 07:42 pm (UTC)Most action films, with a plot like the one in the book, are seen as "good" because the critics/audience goes: "Yeah..creative script..real suspense..I must give it at least a 4!"
Or, do you wanna wait til the film comes out.. see it, and then read the book and be bored because you can't wait til page 304 when everything is reviled..
It's like.. a no-win situation I guess.. You just gotta go with your gut feeling..
I've seen many book->film movies..
"Lord of the Rings" is a book I tried to read when I was young, but I found it to be boring..and ended up reading other fantasy books instead. Then I watched the first film and bought the book and forced myself through it. I thought the book was slow paced, and actually enjoyed the movies more.. Although, I must say.. I did enjoy some parts of the book better than the film.. but I guess it's a give and take situation making a movie..
"Empire of the Sun" Is a movie I saw before reading the book. (Based on a true story) The book is obviously a lot better, but the film is not bad.
"The Outsiders" is a book I read many times before I saw the film. I liked the film alot, but felt some important parts were missing...
A few weeks ago, I got the new version with 22mins of deleted scenes, and it was like watching the extended TT version. It completely blew my mind away. It's basically the whole novel on film. 90% of all their lines are taken from the book..
Anyways.. I guess I could go on and on.. and basically, my comment is longer than Roguems entry in the first place.. so.. I'll just stop babbling now...

Date: 2005-10-21 03:39 am (UTC)I didn't read LOTR, The Hobbit and The Silmarillion until I'd seen FOTR. I absolutely loved all of them. The most recent book I read before seeing the movie was The Perfect Storm. It doesn't usually spoil a movie for me to read the book first. And it doesn't bother me to read spoilers either.
I have Empire of the Sun and love it. Liked The Outsiders, but don't have the DVD. The version you described sounds good. I'll have to get it.
LOL....but I enjoyed it. Thanks a bunch. ;-))
